Rating: 95% - Submitted by Schmokes on 2001.03.10 05:07:13 PM There is a pressing error in The Demotapes on the song Sappy. At 3:02 there is a nasty scratch/pop sound. This error is not mentioned on the bootography. At the risk of being anal retentive, wouldnt it also be proper to lower the grade of this CD, citing the error in sappy and also the fade in and fade out on some of the tracks? Several of the songs are flawed on this CD. The first couple seconds (drum beats) of If You Must are missing. Several of the songs fade in and or out, therefore making them incomplete. Perhaps these errors don't detract from the average listener's enjoyment significantly but they should definitely be mentioned. The fact that the songs fade in is not mentioned on the bootography. The pressing error during Sappy is not mentioned either. I can verify personally that at least 2 copies of the Demotapes contain the pressing error in Sappy, so they probably all do. The Demos on this disc are said to be the best of any disc. Although the sound quality is excellent, many of the tracks arent perfect. Isnt the 88 reel from Out1 remastered of better quality than The Demotapes? The Demotapes is just another -almost- great KTS disc. Outstanding artwork along with just shy of perfect recordings are recurring traits of KTS discs. They just cant close the deal except for The Eternal Legacy. The Demotapes DOES NOT deserve any higher of a grade than the disc B-Sides Themselves which has perfect studio quality sound and no errors. People like me that use the ratings on this bootography to decide which discs they want to buy should have access to as accurate of ratings as possible, and The Demotapes is highly overrated. I wouldnt have wasted my time trying to get this disc had I known all its attributes, most of which are annoying little flaws in what could have been the coolest bootleg ever. |
Rating: 80% - Submitted by Javier Diaz on 2003.01.01 10:10:08 PM This is arguably the worst place to get these demos, for the reasons, read the review above, plus, the remastering is poor, the treble was set higher than neccesary, so the cymbals sound annoying to the ears. In case you were wondering where to find the best versions of these recordings, and the sessions from which they are here I go: - Tracks 1,3,4,5: 1/23/88, the best version is REEL>ANA(1)>DAT>CDR (tracks 15,16,17 are the same as 3,4,5, respectively). - Tracks 2,6,8,9,10,14: 1/23/88, you probably already have them on Incesticide. - Track 7, which is the same as track 11: 1/23/88, the best version is REEL>ANA(?)>DAT>CDR aka "Master Reel Compilation", which is also available on Into the black and Christmas in Seattle. - Tracks 12 and 18: 12/24/88, the best version is REEL>ANA(?)>DAT>CDR aka "Master Reel Compilation", which is also available on Into the black and Christmas in Seattle. - Track 13: 6/11/88, the best version is REEL>ANA(?)>DAT>CDR aka "Master Reel Compilation", which is also available on Into the black and Christmas in Seattle. - Track 19: 4/2-6/90, the best version is on Into the Black - Tracks 20,21,22: 4/2-6/90, the best source is Chad Channing's tape, ANA(2)>CDR - Track 23: 4/2-6/90, the best version is, of course, the official release 'DGC Rarities Vol. 1'. Also available (in a little inferior quality) on Chad's tape. |
