"1991 was truely the year Sub Pop tried their damndest to cash in on 'grunge.' A short-lived idea was the Sub Pop Video Network, which spawned three [approx.] hour-long videos. The first, and hardest to find, features videos from the bands that once formed the backbone of Sub Pop Records. Bands like Nirvana (who?), Mudhoney, and TAD helped pave the way for a lot of the music/crap that we now need to deal with as a result of record companies trying to (and I believe still) find the 'next Nirvana.' Sub Pop, however, knew what was good (Beat Happening) aside from the crap (B*U*S*H). Though I would like to make a point of stating Sub Pop is on the verge of death. Currently, most of their money is made from the bands that are not even signed to them (Mudhoney and Nirvana especially). I heard a god awful rumor saying Sub Pop has begun to sign DANCE 'artists.' Ever the rebel, eh? On with the show...
"Watching these videos, it makes me glad that I never had to viddy them on MTV. They are just plain old boring. I mean the VISUAL aspect of this video, not the AUDIO. In fact, this video serves as a great supplement to The Grunge Years compilation, put out by Sub Pop in 1991 as well. Mudhoney, Nirvana, TAD, Mark Lanegan, Afghan Whigs, The Fluid, The Walkabouts, and Beat Happening all appear on both releases. The video leaves Dwarves, Thee Headcoats, and Seaweed to be exclusive. Some of the songs are the same on both compilations as well.
"All of the videos are basically live collages, along with some random tomfoolery from the bands. The only truely unique (though equally horrible) is Thee Headcoats 'Girl Of Matches' video, which features basically nothing but a burning Barbie doll. Some videos attempt to tie in with the song's title. For example, The Dwarves 'Drugstore' video flashes the names of various over-the-counter pills. Nothing great. Rather boring. Maybe I should make a point of saying I fell asleep the first time I watched this movie, and it was during Nirvana's 'In Bloom' (nothing against the song, just a boring video).
"OK, I know I ragged on this black rectangle just a wee bit much, but it really is boring. If you are buying it for an exciting view, you wasted your money. But if you are buying it for collectibility (yes, it does have an early 'In Bloom' video, the version from the 4-90 Butch Vig sessions), then it is quite a score. Go read The Grunge Years review, then go buy THAT, not this."
