Nirvana Bootography Review: Much of this disc's "A" rating comes from it's being the only commercially available bootleg of this show. "The First Night" is a clear audience recording of the first show of the "In Utero" tour. Unfortunately, this disc is heavily edited, and there is no between song talk... at least the songs don't fade in and out. All surfaced recordings of this show are missing the first track "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter."
It's difficult to enjoy listening to a live show when the continuity is broken by heavy editing... the between song banter is a large part of what makes bootleg CDs entertaining. The band had to start the show early (7:00) so it could finish by 9:00. The required 9:00 ending time is probably the reason "Endless Nameless" is so short. Kurt also plays a little of the "Heartbreaker" solo after "Blew."
If you are trying to collect all the shows that are comercially available, you have a reason to get this CD. Otherwise, pick up something that's a little more fun to listen to. "The First Night" is recommended only for veteran collectors who are looking for something they don't already have.
