Old discographies mention an About a Girl CD single that was released in Holland, and may or may not be limited to 5000 copies. Here's what Jeremy Dean's Nirvana states:
-
ABOUT A GIRL
1994
CDS on Geffen (GEFDS-21958, Australia)
CDS on Geffen (Holland)
TRACKS: (7:15): About A Girl (3:36), Something In The Way (3:37)
CREDITS: Released on October 24, 1994. Limited edition of 5,000, only released in Australia and Holland.
(That same basic description has been quoted before in other resources, so I'm not picking on Dean alone.)
The way that is ambiguously worded makes me wonder if: 1) there are a grand total of 5000 discs from both countries; 2) that both the Australian and Dutch discs are limited to 5000 copies each; 3) or does it refer to just the Aussie release?
The answer to my first question is easy; there were 5000 Australian retail singles (all numbered on the card sleeve), plus another 200 copies (unnumbered) that were used as promos. Also, the catalog number listed above, GEFDS-21958, is correct.
The answer to question #2 is: maybe. The "Holland" CD is probably one of the French-made CDs that were common imports in America in '94. I saw numerous copies of this single and other people have reported the same in their area. I may be wrong, but I always got the feeling that there were more than 5000 of the French CDs (especially version #1).
If the credits are meant to refer only to the Australian CD, that still leaves the issue of what Dean (and others) were writing about when they mention a single from Holland. But like I previously stated, it's probably one of the French CDs.
If anyone can shed some light on this mystery, please contact me.
