Aware that NIRVANA were looking for a drummer, mutual friend, Damon Romero, introduced Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic to Chad Channing at Malfunkshun's farewell show at the Community World Theater. Channing later attended a NIRVANA show on The Evergreen State College campus, I met Krist and Kurt again after the show and they were like, Do you wanna play with us or something? And, I'm like, OK sure. I think it was the following week we got together and jammed. Everyone seemed very cool. (1)

Between seeing NIRVANA at TESC and playing his first show with them at the Vogue, Channing recalls about four or five rehearsals in Novoselic's basement in Tacoma. (1) Cobain and Novoselic had converted the basement into a ramshackle rehearsal studio, sound-proofing the walls with old mattresses, carpet from the Goodwill store, egg cartons that Shelli Dilley and Tracy Marander had brought home from work, and scrap wood lifted from construction sites. (2) After making Channing strip down his mammoth kit, the band rehearsed material from the Crover tape as well as new material such as Big Cheese and School. I just kept on coming over and jamming. They never actually said, Okay, you're in. (2)

Of the first rehearsal, he remembers, It just seemed like a jam. I'm used to playing with lots of people all the time, so it was like another jam session. It's always kind of weird at first when you play with someone you've never worked with before. Those two guys had been playing together for a long time, so I felt a little bit on the outside of what they were doing. But overall, I enjoyed myself. (1)
