THE LIVENIRVANA COMPANION TO OFFICIAL RELEASES:
Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! (Geffen)

Released: 11/15/94 & 11/07/06

Releases: VHS & Laserdisc (11/15/94), DVD (11/07/06).

Additional Infomation: This video, originally conceived by Cobain, was supposed to be released in 1993, but was delayed due to various time pressures including obtaining the necessary video footage, touring and personal issues. As a result it was not completed before Cobain's death in April 1994 and so Novoselic and Grohl endeavoured to finish it off in as much of the spirit in which it was originally intended as possible. The video was finally released in November 1994 on both VHS and Laserdisc. In 2006 it was re-released on DVD with additional bonus material.

Below you will find a both a summary of the content of this video as well as a second-by-second account. NOTE: the insert accompanying the video, detailing the shows the perfomances came from has many mistakes detailed in this section. For example, it states that 'Breed' and 'Polly' came from a Seattle '92 show, the version of 'Something In The Way' was performed in 1992, not 1991 as it states, and 'Nirvana' did not play in Tacoma in 1992.

Introduction:

This guide is intended to act as a companion to the video and provide the reader with information about the footage, the shows which the songs are drawn from, the interviews used and whether the footage is available anywhere else. It is intended for those new to, or yet to start, collecting rare Nirvana material rather than the experienced trader who may already know all the information listed here (and a good deal that isn't!).

Reading the guide:

Please remember this is a heavily edited video and so on a few clips we have amalgamated multiple clips into one simply as they are too short to warrant a full section of their own. We have attempted to cover this in the content section of the clips in question. Other than that you may notice some numbers next to the clip length, this is the time on the video where the clip starts and finishes e.g. if a clip started at 1 minute 32 seconds and finished at 2 minutes 10 seconds this is denoted as 01:32-02:10. This is so you can skip easily on your VCR to a particular clip. Please remember these times are only approximates because the editing of this video is very heavy.

Content: A collage of some home video clips from various dates of no particular interest mostly of the band relaxing before the shows they were due to play. This is backed up by a soundtrack featuring The Star Spangled Banner from 8/30/92 and a lot of people shouting Nirvana. The soundtrack is dubbed on top of the video footage with the occasional excerpt of speech from some of the videos featured. Basically a pretty standard little intro found on many videos of this kind.
Also Available: Home video clips are at present only available here. Full versions of 9/9/92 MTV Music Awards featuring Lithium, the full PRO-shot video for 1/23/93, and the full PRO-shot video and incomplete amateur video for 8/30/92 are widely available in trading circles.

Clip 3 - João Gordo introduction

Length: 15 seconds (03:55-04:10)

Todos!
All of you!

Tenham um bom show e se divirtam bastante!
Have a good show and lots of fun!

Muito obrigado e me desculpem qualquer coisa, falou, se alguém se ofendeu.
Thanks a lot and I apologise for anything, right, if anybody gets offended.

Com vocês, a maior banda underground de todos os tempos,
With you, the biggest underground band of all time,

NIRVANA!

In March 2003 a Brazilian fan, Fabio Faria, emailed liveNIRVANA.com to explain the meaning behind this rather cryptic introduction. João was referring to the controvery surrounding a three-page interview that Krist had done with Brazil's biggest weekly magazine, called 'Veja', Brazil's equivalent of 'Time Magazine', one week before the show. The magazine quoted Krist saying that "80 per cent of our fans are idiots". Krist denied he had said this and he gave João Gordo (who is a major brazillian underground figure, having a hardcore band called Ratos de Porão, and who escorted the band in São Paulo) an announcement to read before the show. Fabio, who was lucky enough to attend this infamous show, recalls: "As I remember it was a little long, about 3-5 min saying things like he and the band would never say that, and the kids who listened to Nirvana was just the same they used to be."

Also available: Probably on the full PRO-shot video for this show which sadly still remains unsurfaced.

Releases: Released on video, laserdisc and DVD.

Additional Infomation: The video, originally conceived by Kurt, was supposed to come out in 1993, but got delayed because of time pressures. Because it therefore wasn't completed before Kurt's death Krist and Dave endeavoured to finish it off in as much of the spirit in which it was originally intended as possible. The insert accompanying the video, detailing the shows the perfomances came from has many mistakes detailed in this section. For example, it states that 'Breed' and 'Polly' came from a Seattle '92 show, the version of 'Something In The Way' was performed in 1992, not 1991 as it states, and 'Nirvana' did not play in Tacoma in 1992.
