Marco Collins: And, well, look who just walked in, it's Krist Novoselic from Nirvana! How are you, Krist?

Krist Novoselic: Mighty fine.

MC: Now what's going on? What are you doing here? You're friends with these guys?

KN: Yeah, yeah, we did a couple of tours with them, so I thought I'd stop in and say "hi" and kinda infringe on their thing… and, uh...

MC: [Laughs] I saw you on a skateboard, kinda skidding around…

KN: Yeah, that was a Sonic Youth skateboard! It was silver. It was my friend, Earnie's.

MC: Did you get it autographed?

KN: Yeah, it's a totally autographed Sonic Youth skateboard.

MC: Right on! Did you get anything autographed yourself from Sonic Youth?

KN: No, I know what it's like to be badgered for autographs, so I don't want to, like, put anybody through that, y'know?

MC: So Krist, what's been going on? You guys have kinda been on hiatus, you did some shows over in Europe…

KN: Europe, yeah. Well, I just came back from Croatia… I was there for 2 weeks…

MC: That's what I hear, you guys-you and your wife were over there on vacation… how was that?

KN: Yeah, yeah… we got shot at!

MC: You got shot at over there?!

KN: We were, like, camping. It was totally, like, some safe situation and then machine guns started to cackle…

MC: My god!

KN: And this bullet just goes whoosh right over our heads! It's like whoa, and we decided that maybe we should get out of there, y'know?

MC: And the thing is Krist, you're tall too, so you probably came real close to the bullet!

KN: Yeah, I don't think they were shooting at us, but… it was crazy! Cuz that's where my family is from, y'know? I've been watching the news and just totally a wreck…

MC: Yikes!

KN: I'm just torn up…

MC: So, now, how did the shows over in Europe go?

KN: Oh, they were great! We played in Belfast, Paris, Scandinavia, and Spain. We played in a bullring in Spain…

MC: You're kidding me?!

KN: It was awesome!

MC: Did you play with other bands over there? Was it a fest-type situation?

KN: We did all the shows with Teenage Fanclub, but there were a couple of festivals we played with, like, the Violent Femmes and Pearl Jam. Oh, we played one show with Extreme, of all bands!

MC: [Laughs] I think I read about that in, like, Melody Maker or something, Kurt saying something about doing a show with Extreme…

KN: And, yeah, I dunno, just playing in front of 50,000 people really sucks, it just seems like it's impersonal, so…

MC: So we can see Nirvana at the Off Ramp very soon(?)

KN: Yeah, we're gonna, like, destroy our careers, cuz we've all got houses out of the deal now…

MC: [Laughs]

KN: So we've got nothing to lose, y'know?!

MC: [Laughs] Oh, that's great! So, now, is this show coming up one of the last shows to happen for a while for Nirvana? The Coliseum show, you're guys are playing…

KN: Oh no, we're gonna go on tour in November.

MC: You are?

KN: Yeah, um, the Portland show's a benefit for Hate Free Oregon, so it's really important.

MC: OK, now, is the show here a benefit also for…? Because I heard that…

KN: No, no, but it's gonna… there's gonna be a booth there for the Washington Music Industry Coalition and they're gonna get some proceeds from the show.

MC: Oh, good to hear. So, let me ask you this Krist, there's been rumors going on that Nirvana… y'know… that this might be one of the last shows that Nirvana does…

KN: Oh, don't believe it!

MC: They're all fake?!

KN: There's always… everyday there's a new…

MC: …a new Nirvana rumor.

KN: Yeah, there's like a "Kurt is dead" rumor every other day…

MC: [Laughs] Well, that's true…

KN: And if you open up Melody Maker there's all this, like, "he died in a plane crash," or y'know, whatever…

MC: Right. So Nirvana isn't anywhere near calling it quits?

KN: No, no… no way.

MC: You guys are going on with things…

KN: Yeah, we're just… I dunno… we're just kinda hiding out a little bit…

MC: Kinda like taking some time off…

KN: Letting the storm pass and… Yeah, but now we're gonna get ready to start doing things again.

MC: Now, I hear the new album - the stuff you guys have been working on - is pretty… pretty extreme. At least, that's what you were telling me last time, it's noisier, yet…

KN: Well, yeah, if you heard Curmudgeon, the b-side to Lithium, it's kind of a hint of things to come…

MC: Of what we're gonna be getting…

KN: Yeah.

MC: Now, is this true that Steve Albini is gonna have a hand in production here? Or is that another rumor?

KN: His name's been thrown around, but there's no real concrete thing set up, like we're gonna record here or we're gonna there…

MC: Chicago?

KN: Well, no, that's not set up. There's some stuff we're gonna do at Word Of Mouth… oh… [laughs] I'm not supposed to say anything about…

MC: OK, [laughs] you don't have to, you don't have to say anything!

KN: Um… [laughs] people are just talking, word of mouth, and anyway, um… we're just doing stuff here and there…

MC: Cool! Now, you guys have Screaming Jay Hawkins opening for you [laughs], it's gonna be intense!

KN: Yeah, awesome, awesome. I saw him in this hotel lounge in Paris…

MC: Did he have the coffin?

KN: No, it was a like a really low-key, streamlined tourist show. He was doing like two sets a night. I paid $50 for a double Jack Daniels!

MC: Damn! This is in Europe?

KN: Cuz Paris is expensive! Yeah, but it was something like 200 Francs and I'm like…

KN: No, not really.

MC: Just a hard-slamming Nirvana show.

KN: When those things happen they're like so spontaneous, like, we'll just come up with some idea…

MC: Like the one you did at the Paramount here, last time the band played?

KN: Yeah, those friends asked if they could dance for us and we're like, "Oh, yeah, come on up!"

MC: That's great! Alright, let's play a song from the album, this is Lithium and thanks again Krist for stopping by!
