SONG & ORIGINAL BAND/ARTIST: Asshole (The Disenfranchised)
BAND/ARTIST OF RECORDING: The Disenfranchised
INFORMATION: The track was circulated in April 2000 on Napster.
This is an open and shut case because the person that created the song came forward in February 2001. Here's what
they had to say: "Hey my band recorded Asshole, my guitaring is pretty shitty as
these songs were recorded at Studio 650 2 years ago before they tore it down ... Anyway we
passed around a little demo tape (our band is called 'The Disenfranchised') and our shit
ended up on Napster. Then some people started renaming files and fucking around with
people. Dont kill me, I just think you guys should know the truth."
This reveals one of the easiest ways to make a fake: by renaming obscure bands' songs
which sound NIRVANA-esque because this makes the risk of immediate detection low (NIRVANA
fans are unlikely to recognise the track) and by stealing other bands studio songs it is
effortless to create a good quality fake (rather than a poor recording with a boombox).
But, as in this case, the truth does emerge in the end.
UPDATE - Although this person claims to have also recorded the Heavy 'Opinion' fake, it has recently been discovered that it was actually recorded by the band 'Slow Driver Down'.

DEVICES USED: Audio Mixing Program (Acoustica Audio Mixer)
DATE OF CIRCULATION: April 2000

of this recording:
"this was a project of mine for my band Outshined - the song was a secret song on the
end of our album. The song consisted of of 3 pieces:
- Mpegs of The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather (carefully cut and pasted)
- AC/DC's 'Back In Black' (played backwards and carefully edited)

BAND/ARTIST OF RECORDING: Pearl Jam
INFORMATION: A 1:24 min track labelled as 'NIRVANA - Rare - 50 - Suggestion (Fugazi cover)'. It is a live recording by Pearl Jam, who have covered the song quite a few times. It is worth pointing out that during the majority of this track, an acoustic guitar can be heard jamming on what sounds like Smells Like Teen Spirit. Maybe this is why this recording has been mislabeled as NIRVANA.
SONG & ORIGINAL BAND/ARTIST: Thank God, I'm An Atheist (Unknown)
BAND/ARTIST OF RECORDING: Unknown
INFORMATION: This has been found on KaZaA as a one-minute mp3, mislabelled as "nirfake (doh ray & me)" and also "NIRVANA - Rare - Kurt's Last Recording". Although the start of the song sounds similar to NIRVANA, the latter part is too heavy - pointing towards a modern nu-metal band. However, the name of the band is currently unknown. Another version of this fake has been also circulating. It is the same recording, but with a vocal recorded over. This was made by William Clarke who created the Fecal Matter demo fake.
