Live Nirvana Bootography Review:
"New Years Eve" captures a long energetic performance by the band from a digital audience source. The sound is crisp and clear throughout with the only complaints being some occasional audience talk and low volume on a few of the quieter songs. There is quite a bit of interaction between the band and the audience during the performance, including a highlight where Kurt stops in the middle of "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam" to laugh at an audience member "copping a feel" (someone was apparently "feeling up" his girlfriend)!! The whole band stops and laughs at the offending audience member.

The show is quite long and spans over both discs (25 songs in all). At the end of the performance, Kurt starts talking about how long it will be until the countdown "How long... 3 Minutes!!! We have to stall for 3 minutes???!!!!" Dave chimes in "I can do a drum solo" and he starts beating his bass drum while the crowd goes nuts. Shortly after Dave begins his solo, Kurt begins the countdown to the new year, afterwhich Kurt tells the audience "Happy New Year!" (if you have the video, you see Paulie Shore lowered to the stage in a cherub costume). It's a little sad to hear the band in such good spirits knowing that there were only 2 months of shows left.

The filler on disc two is the 12-28-88 show. The introduction is actually hidden at the end of track 6. The introduction is not as complete as the one found on Seattle 1988. The recording sounds like it's been put through some noise reduction, but is fairly close in quality to Seattle 1988 (it's a clear audience recording). The last track is Krist's eulogy at Kurt's memorial service.

This disc is an excellent value. There are two great shows, one of which can only be found in it's complete form on this set. While the majority of the intro is missing from the 12-28-88 show, it's not worth buying another CD. The artwork is a little grainy, but the disc set is still attractive.

POSITIVES:
** The disc contains a great show that is complete and has good sound.
** The show has a great setlist.
** The filler is a great show also (12/28/88).
** Kurt's voice sounds fantastic, and he sings with a lot of passion.
** There are great versions of songs, in particular Drain You, Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Frances Farmer, and the Man Who Sold the World.
** The ending of the show is great.

NEGATIVES:

** The sound, while good, isn't as good as the non-cd source of the show.
** For the most part, the bass and cello are buried throughout most of the show, and you can't hear the cello at all throughout Dumb, which is disappointing.
** Kurt's guitar is horribly out of tune at the end of Pennyroyal Tea and it just sounds terrible.
** There really isn't much dialogue, although when they do speak its pretty humorous(like Krist singing a bit of the Dead Kennedys "California Uber Alles" before Jesus Wants Me and altering it to say "now its 1994" instead of 1984)

I think that for the most part the positives outweigh the negatives, and its a great 2-disc set.
