Live Nirvana Bootography Review:
Theres 2 ways of looking at this disc and its many clones, from the hardcore audiophile point of view they're worthless, but for a casual Nirvana fan who stumbles across this DVD in the shops and has no knowledge of bootlegs or tape trading it probably seems like the best thing since sliced bread!
Some British DVD production companies seem to have found a loophole in the law that allows them to produce "Legal Bootlegs" similar to the shortlived situation in Australia that occurred around 1994 with the unauthorised live cd's and these DVD's are now cropping up in normal high street record shops in the UK. the DVD has a square blue "Nirvana Broadcasting live" logo in the bottom right corner of the picture throughout and songwriting credits are superimposed on the screen at the the start of the song as required by the law. Rape Me is in very good quality, likely ripped from the offical official SNL DVD. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Territorial Pissings" are from a very generated tape and badly encoded with lots of digital artefacts on sound and vision and overall quality on a par with a VCD.
The final track "Heart Shaped Box" is slightly worse quality than "Rape Me" but no where near as bad as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Territorial Pissings"
The first Bar of "Rape Me" has been cut, presumably to disguise the origin of the footage (The Official SNL DVD).
The 4/17/87 audio tracks are initially accompanied by a montage of Nirvana pictures, but by Mexican Seafood this has been replaced by footage of some hilariously bad actors miming to the tracks, its likely the audio portion of the radio session was lifted from Outcesticide V, a better copy is available in traders circles.
The "other disc" in this 2 DVD set is the usual unofficial documentary intercut with clips from common shows like Unplugged, Live & Loud, SNL & 11/19/91 which seems to have been taken from the Trading circle DVD authored by Barry Lajwand.
