LiveNIRVANA.com 2001 Annual Report

Introduction

LiveNIRVANA.com [LN] was founded by Frank Morris, Matt Reeder and Katey Corrigan in March 2000. By the end of the year, LN had already established itself as the internet site of choice for the discerning NIRVANA live enthusiast, and had amassed around 60,000 hits. Frank Morris decided to cede control of the site in March 2001 to Adam Andrews and Charles Furth, by which point LN had just under 80,000 hits. At the end of 2001, LN had doubled the number of sections it hosted and had received more than 236,000 hits.

Matt Seward retired from the LN Editorial Team at the end of 2001.

Frank Morris stepped down as LN leader and owner in March 2001, following a year of hard work to create the site you are reading. Frank was a visionary, who had the insight to realise that there was demand for a website for LN, and had the perseverance to assemble a team which enabled his project to come to fruition. He wrote almost all of LN's original content, and his influence is still extremely strong. In particular, Frank founded the LiveNIRVANA Collectors Union, as well as writing the NIRVANA Fakes Guide and Inside The Horror Movies, two of LN's most enduring and popular sections. Frank can still be found lurking in the LN Ultimate Bulletin Board forums. We would like to thank Frank once again for his incredible efforts, and remind you all that this site would not exist without him.

Matt Reeder was co-Founder of LN, and was highly active on the site since its inception until his retirement in March 2001. Matt put considerable effort into the LN Photos section, and we are grateful for the hours he spent scanning them in for your enjoyment. Matt also made numerous contributions to other parts of the site, including fascinating articles in the Documents section. Matt was a moderator at nirvanaclub.com for an extended period, and is currently working on his Soundgarden Live Guide, also hosted at LN.

Katey Corrigan retired as LN designer in March 2001. Katey designed the LN site, and created LN's distinctive look. We thank her for her large contribution to LN.

Matt Seward retired at the end of the year, following nine months of active service at LN. Matt wrote the LN TV Clips Guide, launched in December, and the second-by-second guides to three NIRVANA videos; 'Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!', '1991: The Year Punk Broke' and 'Kurt & Courtney', revealed in September and October. Matt also made unseen and uncredited contributions to all new sections on LN this year, and made many valuable corrections before the documents were uploaded to LN. Matt was also a moderator of two forums on the LN UBB. We would like to thank him for all his hard work, and add how much we are in awe of the documents he produced for LN. His dedication, sharp analysis and wit will be sorely missed.

Erik Bianchi retired as maintainer of various LN sections in November 2001. Erik spent many hours updating documents such as the LN Bad Traders List and the First and Last Performance Guide. We are grateful for all his hard work at the site. Erik is still a moderator of the LN UBB.

Website Sections News:
In summer 2001, owing to the rapidly expanding number of LN sections on the index page, it was decided to group them into self-explanatory four categories: LN Resources, LN Histories, LN Guides and LN Documents.

A) LiveNIRVANA Resources: Section Annual Reports.
The LN Resources category currently comprises of five sections, one of which is completely new this year, and the others have all either had major new additions or updates.

  1. The LN Ultimate Bulletin Board [UBB] remains the focal point of the site. There are currently 448 members, which is lower than at this point last year because the new management removed two hundred unused or duplicate aliases. The UBB has been run by Chris Hickman*, who has done a magnificent job keeping order and ensuring the UBB is a pleasant environment in which to post.

The NIRVANA Discussion Forum is moderated by Erik Bianchi*, Chris Lomas and Cale Wedell, and has hosted some fascinating posts concerning all aspects of NIRVANA. We would also like to thank Matt Seward for his efforts as moderator in this forum over the year. The Collectible Recordings Forum is moderated by John Etter*, Brian McConnell and Adam DeLoach, and has been used to thrash out all sorts of factual details concerning live recordings. We would like to extend our thanks to Damien Rockwell and Matt Seward for helping moderate here. The Free Discussion Forum is moderated by Marcus Bremer*, John Riedell and Joseph Vilane, and has hosted many in-depth discussions of subjects from the sublime to the trivial. The LNCU is moderated by Matt Seward, Charles Furth and Adam Andrews. Please see separate report below. The LNCU has seen many posts concerning surfacing of new NIRVANA recordings, many of which were successful reports of discovering new material. The Technical forums have been lightly used, but play a vital function in the functioning of the site. Questions, Comments is moderated by Adam Andrews and Report Technical Problems is moderated by Matt Empson.

Asterisks denotes those who have remained with LN since before the change of ownership. We are particularly grateful to them for their long service and ensuring the continuity on LN which enables the site to thrive.

  2. The LiveNIRVANA Collectors' Union [LNCU] has had a renaissance over the past few months and is once again a hive of activity. The LNCU forum on the UBB has been well-populated with interesting leads on new recordings, and a considerable amount of information and pictures from unsurfaced shows. LNCU has surfaced two new recordings this year (11/16/89 Nuernbergh, Germany in December 2001 and 10/06/91 Atlanta on CDR in January 2001) and has helped to circulate some of the other major discoveries of the year (including the videos of 07/13/89 Hoboken, 07/18/89 New York and 10/06/91 Atlanta).

LNCU is also grateful to Benoit Martigny for his prodigious efforts in tracking down new recordings, and will also circulate his various discoveries in the new year. These include 07/23/93 (SBD) New York, 10/29/89 (upgrade) Birmingham, 12/01/89 (more complete) Issy-Les-Molineaux and another new upgrade of 12/07/91 Rennes.

Other new shows have been mentioned in LNCU, including 07/15/89 Jamaica Plain, which has the distinction that Cobain does not play guitar at all, 04/26/90 (new show) New York, 11/07/93 Williamsburg DAT upgrade, 10/31/93 Akron upgrade, the Fisk Session 'Token Eastern Song' studio recording.

    For the record:

The 11/16/89 is from Trust, Nuernbergh, West Germany and is a 1st generation analog cassette, which is B+ quality. The setlist is:

Scoff / Love Buzz / Floyd The Barber / Sappy / Big Cheese / jam / About A Girl / Mr Moustache / Breed / Been A Son / Negative Creep / Blew (cuts off)

The 07/18/89 is from Pyramid Club, New York, NY, US and is a more complete video of unknown generation. It contains 4 new songs.

    School / Floyd The Barber / Love Buzz / Dive / Polly / Big Cheese / Scoff / About A Girl/ Blew

The 07/13/89 is from Maxwell's, Hoboken, NJ, US and is an incomplete video of the show. The setlist of the video is:

School (cut in) / Floyd The Barber / Love Buzz / About A Girl / Scoff / Spank Thru / Blew

The LNCU section (accessible via the LN index page) has also been expanded, and two new pages have been added. The LNCU Recordings Verification Service was launched in June 2001, and since October 2001 LNCU has included a section of draft letters which are suitable for sending to old traders and TV / radio studios in your hunt for new material.

  3. The NIRVANA Traders Database has needed no modification since its inception, and now includes a list of traders who are willing to do 'B+P' trades (maintained by Rolf Fassbind), which was added in October 2001.

  4. The NIRVANA Bad Traders List had been maintained all year by Erik Bianchi, and we are grateful for all the dedication he has shown in this task. Erik updated the section nine times in 2001.

  5. Live NIRVANA news is a completely new section, which was launched in March 2001 to compile the most up-to-date information about new recordings in the community. It has already been updated 13 times in its first nine months.

B) LiveNIRVANA Histories: Section Annual Reports
This is a new category on LN, created in December to house two new sections.

  1. LN Sessions History was launched in December 2001, having been researched and written over the previous nine months. This section aims to be the definitive resource for such information. Adam Andrews conducted all of the research, and Charles Furth wove his facts together into a document.

  2. LN Tour History was launched simultaneously in December 2001, and compiles the best-known circulating sources for each surfaced concert recording. It also provides setlists, and will expand again to accommodate reader reviews of the shows. We at LN hope that this will become the definitive source of information for those who wish to know the best available generations of concerts.

C) LiveNIRVANA Guides: Section Annual Reports.
This category comprises of twelve sections, of which five are completely new this year, and a further three have had major additions.

  1. The LiveNIRVANA TV Guide was launched in December 2001, and was the last document written for LN by Matt Seward. His final effort is a veritable tour de force, and lists every known TV clip of NIRVANA ever broadcast on television. Matt traded constantly for many months simply to acquire the material, and spent hundreds of hours making notes on every single one that he unearthed in this document.

  2. The LiveNIRVANA DVD Guide was launched in December 2001 and contains reviews of all known NIRVANA DVDs. The section also boasts a technical description of the transfer process by Jim Hirte, widely acclaimed to be pre-eminent in the field.

  3. The LiveNIRVANA Companion to Official Releases was launched in September 2001. This section contains comprehensive, second-by-second guides to the official videos '1991: The Year Punk Broke' and 'Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!', as well as detailed notes on many other releases. Matt Seward wrote the vast majority of the new material, and we are grateful to him for his dedication in pursuing such a gigantic task. The section has had two major updates / additions already.

  4. The LiveNIRVANA Guide to Mislabels was launched in June. This section lists both mislabelled dates and mislabelled generations in as much detail as possible. It has been updated twice.

  5. The Audiophile Completists' Guide to NIRVANA Bootleg CDs was launched in May to a somewhat ambivalent reception. However, this document is valuable for those who wish to check whether the best known circulating sources for concerts originate from commercial bootlegs, or whether collectors have superior versions. The section has been updated twice.

  6. The First and Last Performance Guide gained a Commentary in April 2001, which elucidates the information given in the section, and is now being maintained by Cale Wedell. Cale is currently working on a major update.

  7. Inside The Horror Movies had some additions in October following a major submission of new information concerning the contents of the infamous video.

  8. The NIRVANA Fakes Guide remains one of LN's most popular sections, but has not been updated this year.

  9. The NIRVANA PRO-Tapers List has had minor corrections over the year.

  10. The NIRVANA Concert Statistics section has not been updated all year, although the figures will not have changed significantly.

  11. Bootlegs For Beginners by Matt Empson has had a few errors corrected, but no major changes since last year.

  12. The NIRVANA Live Guide is not hosted at LN, but has been updated an impressive 25 times this year. We thank Kris Sproul for his efforts.

D) LiveNIRVANA Documents: Section Annual Reports

  1. The NIRVANA Day-by-Day History was generously donated to LN by Michael Sanderson in September 2001, and was completely refurbished before launch. Michael spent hundreds of hours scouring a variety of different sources to bring you the information reported here.

  2. The Rare Concert Photos section has had many new submissions this year, and has been updated six times. We are grateful to all those who have sent us photos for inclusion in this section.

  3. The LN Lifetime Achievement Award saw the addition on DigitalNirvana.net's Mitch Vassar added to the Hall of Fame for his considerable efforts in propelling DN into the place to be for information on NIRVANA commercial releases. The section was also modified several times to incorporate new information.

  4. The Important Documents section is a catch-all for many other miscellaneous LN sections. Joseph Vilane worked prodigiously on his Pencil Pages, and has now submitted eighteen editorials for your enjoyment and stimulation, of which twelve are new this year. The Guide to Procuring Bootlegs Around the World was updated in October 2001, and a review of the Charles R Cross biography "Heavier Than Heaven" was added in August 2001.

  5. LiveNIRVANA Links has been updated twice in 2001.
